Which Programme would you identify as the masthead show?
I think that the Masthead show on Channel 5 is Animal Maternity. This is because it starts at prime time so there will be a lot of people watching it. It also appeals to a vast audience because many people like animals.
What type of shows are aired during the prime time slot?
There are usually documentary's on at prime time. For example Monster moves. Also on weekdays NCIS and CSI are on at prime time. On Fridays and weekends there are usually some sort of film on, mostly action films. Also around 20:55 the 5 minute 5 news comes on. This might be because people in the day time maybe at work or education so they couldn't check the news in the day. I also think the documentary's are on in the evening because it is when adults get home from work so it might be something they enjoy watching.
How, in your view, does Five construct a brand image with its programme schedule?
In my opinion Channel 5 constructs a brand image that is very suitable for a wide audience but in particular adults.I think this because the majority of the shows on Channel 5 are documentary's and dramas that some children and teenagers may not find interesting. Although this doesn't mean that some teenager and children may still like them!
Hammocking, Inheritance and Pre-echo
Channel 5 has cleverly placed the news in the middle of prime time. They hammock it so that it is between two popular programmes, for example Monster Moves and NCIS. This is good because as the news is only 5 minutes people might just keep it on instead of switching to another channel. This is because it is the news which could be good to boost views.
Channel 5 used Pre-echo with there programme Animal maternity before there extremely popular programme, NCIS. They have done this so that some people might tune in earlier to watch it. This will mean more views for channel 5.
Inheritance is used for a few of there programmes, for example The Railway: First great western replaced Animal maternity at 8pm. this meant that people might watch it because it is also a documentary.

Comparing bbc 1, channel 4 and channel 5
BBC 1's programmes are all 30mins long in prime time whereas Channel 4 and 5 are about an hour long. This shows that BBC may want to show a variety of programmes. Channel 5 likes to show crime drama's and documentary's whereas channel 4 shows all comedy's through prime time. This tells us that it could be for a completely different audience to what the other 2 channels show. BBC 1 shows there soap opera, Eastenders every week in the evening, but channel 5 shows Neighbours and home and away, which are both Australian. They are all competitive because they all show different types of programmes, Some that will suit the younger generation and some for the older generation. Channel 4 shows a lot of programmes that a younger generation will enjoy to watch because there is a lot of comedy. Channel 5 shows programmes that will suit an older generation, this could prove more popular because a lot of adults have there own TV. BBC combines both of these things and shows all types of genres which will please many people.
Average 5 viewer
I believe that the average five viewer would be middle aged and interested in drama and documentaries. This is because most of Channel 5's shows are documentary's and drama's so there is plenty for people to watch. I don't think it would matter what class they are because many adults enjoy documentary.
Strategies used by 5 to target its audience
One strategy channel 5 use is to put most of there popular programmes at prime time because that's the sort of time people can come home from work and education to watch it! For there childrens programmes they start at 6am which is when they may wake up and they can watch them before school! Another great thing they do is put programmes more appealing to elderly people in the daytime because they might not work so they have something to watch.
