Richard Avedon
Richard Avedon was an american fashion and portrait photographer born on May 15th, 1923. In 1944 he Avedon began working as an advertising photographer for a department store. In 1946 he set up his own studio and began providing photos for different magazine including Life and Vogue. In 1952 he became staff editor and photographer for Theatre Arts Magazine. As well as doing fashion work he also did studio portraits of civil rights workers and politicians. Other notable photos he did was of the Vietnam War and the fall of the Berlin Wall. In 1962 he was the lead photographer for Vogue. In 1980 he photographed the Calvin Klein jeans campaign featuring Brooke Shield, as well as directing her in the television commercials. Avedon is also known for his large prints, which sometimes measured over three feet in height. These prints were usually of miners and cowboys.
my views
I like Avedon's simple approach to Fashion photography. Unlike David Bailey who uses random and extravagant clothing to make the subject stand out, Avedon focuses more on the persons face or body. In most of his photos the subjects do not show many facial expressions. I believe Avedon has got them to do this because it makes the rest of there body stand out.
